Largemouth Bass

Some of the most populous fish in Lake Travis are the largemouth bass that attract anglers from all over Texas. These fish thrive around rocky points, submerged trees, and small channels. The spring season sees the bass moving into shallow coves for spawning, making them plentiful in the summer months.

Aside from the largemouth variety, Lake Travis has other bass, such as Guadalupe and white bass, to add some variety. Bass are delicious and make for fantastic fishing trophies!

Catfish

If you look closer at what species of fish are in Lake Travis, you can find a wide range of catfish. While blue catfish are the most common, you can also find channel and flathead catfish. Some of these fish can exceed 30 pounds, making them a good target for anglers trying to reel in something big. Flathead catfish are more active in the evening hours, making them great to catch while night fishing.

Sunfish

The term “sunfish” actually refers to a few different species, including the bluegill, redear sunfish, and longear sunfish. These fish are plentiful and not very strong, making them a good option for beginner anglers in seasons when the bass aren’t as plentiful. Sunfish spawn in shallow areas in the spring, which makes it easy to find concentrated fishing spots around the lake’s coves and flat areas.

Use small hooks and light tackle when looking for sunfish. They’re fond of live worms, crickets, and smaller jigs, and they typically feed around plants, so cast around vegetation or rocky areas.
