5 SUN SAFETY TIPS ALL BOATERS SHOULD KNOW

When you’re preparing to head out on the water, there are several crucial things to remember. The sun’s rays may quickly turn a day of fun into painful days of sunburn or worse. Before you get out on the water, here are five sun safety tips all boaters should know to ensure a better time for everyone.

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY

Sunscreen is the most vital component when it comes to keeping yourself safe in the sun. It’s best to use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF and apply it thoroughly to any exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside. Once on the boat, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours; we also recommend ensuring your sunscreen is sweat- and water-resistant if you plan on going swimming.

STAY HYDRATED

Dehydration is one of the most substantial risks when out on a boat, and it’s better to have an overabundance of water than not enough. When heading out on a boat for the day, you should have at least one gallon per person available to drink. We also advise drinking about 16 ounces before you get out on the water.

WEAR THE RIGHT SUNGLASSES

Sunglasses look cool and keep the sun out of your eyes. However, many people think that darker shades equal more protection. This is not the case, as even lighter color sunglasses are protective with the proper UV protection. When shopping for sunglasses, look for a UV 400 rating for optimum safety, and consider wraparound shades to get the most coverage over your eyes.

BRING PROTECTIVE COVERINGS

Bringing protective clothing out on the boat is an important safety tip that all boaters should know when out in the sun. Lightweight clothing that covers as much skin as possible and protective coverings like hats may keep you safer when you’re idling in direct sunlight.

STICK TO THE SHADE

When you have the option, consider staying in the shade, or have a way to get out of the sun when necessary. If at any point you feel yourself overheating, get out of the sun and cool down in the shade with a glass of water.

Following these tips for staying safe out in the sun will ensure everyone on board has a fun, trouble-free day.
