Try These Weird Tricks To Avoid Motion Sickness on the Lake

Kinetosis, more commonly known as motion sickness, is a common ailment among many people. The typical cause is that your eyes, inner ear, and body send mixed signals about what’s actually moving to your brain. These conflicting senses often lead to a mild nauseated feeling that can make it difficult to enjoy carnival rides, VR headsets, and boats. While a common way to relieve this mild illness is to take medication for it ahead of time, you may also want to try these weird tricks to avoid motion sickness when you’re out on the lake.

Taking Command

Do you ever find yourself getting motion sickness when you’re in the passenger seat of a car but not when you’re the one driving it? This is normal because it connects back to your brain, getting mixed messages about what’s happening. Your brain isn’t as confused about the movement when it’s getting signals from your hands that you’re the one causing it. So, if you’re out on the boat, put on your best captain face and try taking command of the wheel. Even if you’re not currently driving anywhere, taking control may help steady your condition.

Sipping Some Bubbles

The last thing that you want to do to yourself when you’re feeling nauseated is overload your stomach. However, taking small sips can help calm things down and hopefully alleviate some of the symptoms. Water is always a good option, but something carbonated is even better, so try sparkling water if you have it. Some of the best choices are ginger ale or a lemon-lime soda like 7Up or Sprite. If you suffer from motion sickness, you may want to toss a few of those in the cooler before you cast off.

A Strong Scent

Our sense of smell is one of our most powerful senses. In some cases, a strong enough scent can make motion sickness worse, for example, some people aren’t receptive to that “new car smell,” or even the smell of the lake water. Fortunately, while our sense of smell can worsen things, it may also improve them. If you start to feel nauseated, one weird trick to avoid motion sickness on the lake is to take in a strong smell like peppermint or lavender. These smells have relaxing effects and can help soothe an upset stomach.
